︎ BIO

Jacksonville’s Ryan David Roberts began his career, in a way, at the top. As a founding member, bassist and co-writer of pop-punk mainstay Cartel in the early 2000s, he released a gold record, signed to a major label, and performed around the world. But the peak was not all it seemed. In the climb to the summit, he’d accumulated a pile of creative differences with his bandmates and a feeling of unrest. In a moment of wide-eyed, early-twenties optimism, and with little sense of ownership over the direction of the band — including being baffled by talks of a network reality show — Roberts walked away. It was the kind of big, gravitational moment you could spend a lifetime returning to: did I make the right choice?

Walking away meant starting over. Moving to New York City, Roberts traded major-label machinery for the chaos and freedom of DIY, searching for the right project and collaborators while honing his craft as a songwriter and musician. There, he developed a blend of punk grit and understated complexity, playing in projects like Mexico Beach, Zhivago, and Dinos Boys. His bands built followings in Brooklyn bars and basements, merging the sounds of his Southern roots with a growing appetite for experimentation.

By 2014, life had pulled him farther north. A relationship brought him to Winnipeg; kids, community, and a vibrant local scene convinced him to stay. It was there, after years of shaping other bands’ identities as a collaborator, that Roberts found himself quietly amassing a collection of warped indie-rock songs that were all his own. With his own songs at the centre, he enlisted producer Adam Fuhr (Amos the Kid, Virgo Rising, Yes We Mystic) and began work on a solo project that would become General Assembly, and an album that would become Fundamental Balancing.

The result is a striking, creative debut full of sharp lyricism and restless energy; a lifetime of ideas pouring out, a seasoned artist finally stepping centre stage. Blending post-punk and acoustic indie rock, Roberts draws from a vibrantly broad palette — including string sections, upright piano, and backup singers — to create music that dances a line between nervous, wiry energy and lush orchestration. Fundamental Balancing is a product of the question Roberts has carried with him all these years, and, in some ways, an answer to it: a record that could not exist without that twenty-something moment, or all the moments that followed.

Produced, engineered, and mixed by Fuhr at House of Wonders, with mastering from Donavan Ostapowich (Show Pony, Tired Cossack, Good Bandits), Fundamental Balancing features contributions from Arielle Beaupré and Jasmine Henry (Amos the Kid), Eric Ross (Yes We Mystic), and Luis Almeida. It will be released worldwide on December 4, 2026 via House of Wonders Records on cassette and streaming platforms.
